Hands Full of Glitter and Tofu : 2011 Day 334 - Kathy to the G

Big night!

We went to see the incomparably funny Kathy Griffin tonight at the Opera House thanks to some excellent forward-planning by my lovely now ex-colleague Lisa P. Coming along for the ride with Lisa, my guy and I were the divine Alison M, and Lisa's friends Chris, Kate, Zoe and Jim.

The food was only semi-delicious (and a bit over priced) at Studio Cafe under the Opera House but that mattered not, as we were there to see Kathy Griffin, and once my friend Waz met us outside the concert hall just before the start time of 8 p.m. we trooped in for 2 hours of the most deliciously politically incorrect jokes about everyone from Justin Bieber to Oprah to the Kardashians and Gwyneth Paltrow. I haven't laughed so hard in a long time, surrounded by most of gay Sydney I think, and while I hadn't seen much of her lately she is an insanely talented, very funny lady and it was a perfect way to spend a school night.

Without my glasses, she looked much like this. (So I borrowed my guy's glasses a couple of times to see her clear and un-blurred!)

Pity about the pouring rain that trapped us at Erskineville station for a while at 11 at night...

Hands Full of Glitter and Tofu : 2011 Day 333 (Tuesday 29 November) - Rambo comes to work

One of the loveliest parts of working where I now work is that my boss, who adores her two cats and her dog, often brings them to the office. Rambo, who is the cutest of dogs, and who visits most often, came today carried Paris Hilton-style in a red bucket and looked just adorable.

Naturally I had to take a photo...or six...

Hands Full of Glitter and Tofu : 2011 Day 332 - Rambo comes to work

I know it's still technically my birthday week but I need to eat healthy food again...

Wacky Monday!

Time disappeared into a celebratory haze on my birthday when I'd normally do my postings on fun internet things I like so here it is on Monday to brighten the hardest day of the week! (from my usual sources - Vimrod and Ambiguity Report Maybe, both of which rock and must be checked out by you!)

Hands Full of Glitter and Tofu : 2011 Day 331 - "But wait there's more!" (Kerry) weekend!

Today we had a far more relaxed start to the day. My gorgeous guy and I slept in, Kerry watched her trio of Sunday morning TV shows - Insiders (I watched the latter part of it with her), Inside Business, and Offsiders, and somewhere about 11am, we headed out to find a patisserie high on Kerry's Sydney Wish List - Patisse. It was supposed to be somewhere in the Danks Street, Waterloo food precinct but the website was missing the exact street number, so we grabbed a parking spot where we could find one (it's always a challenge) and we headed out across the street to go exploring.

Turns out we didn't have to go far. Patisse, it's windows filled with gingerbread houses with beret-wearing snowman in their front yards, was on the first corner across the street. The signs weren't all that obvious and it was only because my guy wanted to check out said gingerbread houses (his sister was a chef and makes them every year) that we paid much attention to the large brick building at all.

Inside the place was an absolute delight. It is decorated with macaroon trees, and Christmas trees festooned with macaroon-filled baubles, and the atmosphere was bright, shiny and friendly. The people behind the counter were generous and happy to talk, and even brought out replacement coffees for us when the first ones arrived during the food service, and not before. The food itself was beyond divine - the eggs benedict, I am told by my guy and Kerry were delicious (they used real ham!), my mushroom and goats cheese on sourdough bread superlative, and the patisseries were varied and suffused with the most amazing flavours. We could choose from five different flavours of meringue (hard on the outside, gooey soft inside - lavender, pistachio, apricot were three of the flavours I remember), salted caramel eclairs, lime and green tea cheesecake, macaroons (or 'macaroons' as the French term them) and so much more. I even tweeted how awesomely delicious these sugary treats were, and the patisserie responded within an hour which was damn fine customer service.

This is a fantastic discovery, and I have no doubt all of us will be back, with Fahmi too no doubt, for more food and even a cooking class or two...

Full up to pussy's bow with sugary treats, we headed off to get some kulcha at the Art Gallery of NSW. We had tickets to the Picasso exhibition and it was so worth going to see. He was an amazing man, prodigiously talented, with a one-of-a-kind eye for colour, shape and perspective. He was also very intelligent, using his art to make all sort of pith statements on the state of society. I loved every last moment of the exhibition as did my gorgeous who loves anyone who can create both paintings and sculpture, and sometimes, merge the two.

 It was a wonderful afternoon.

Back home, and we finished off the most perfect of weekends with a mostly healthy dinner - we each had a slice of the birthday cake from the night before... as if we couldn't! - of chicken tenderloins cooked in lemon pepper seasoning before we took Kerry to the airport and bid her a sad farewell.

I loved having her here for my birthday and it was the loveliest gift I could have got from a person who is my dearest and closest friend, and always knows just how to make something already special even more special. Thank you my wonderful special friend.

Hands Full of Glitter and Tofu : 2011 Day 330 - Glebe, Cinema and the Gathering of Friends

What a fun day!

With Kerry in town, any and all plans were up for grabs since naturally while my gorgeous guy knew she was coming, I didn't. But we ended up doing almost what I had planned since Kerry was up for anything, and besides, she said, "its your weekend and you get to choose what we do."

So even though it was raining, which meant one part of my great birthday weekend plan, which was go to the not-open-at-all-due-to-inclement-weather Glebe Markets didn't come to fruition, we did get to eat brunch at Roxanne, a great cafe that Kerry and I had visited previously.

And we got to see the all important birthday movie! This year the honour went to a taut, well told political drama, Ides of March, which I loved. It was slow moving sure but in the best possible way, and it starred the delectably handsome and sexy Ryan Gosling so I got intellectual stimulation and some of the, um, other kind.... aaanywaaay, the movie was excellent! Thankfully Kerry and my lovely guy enjoyed it too.

Back home for a nap, and then we got all dolled up, and headed out to Kuletos in Newtown for drinks and the giving of gifts from Warren, Peter, Ian and others... and the 2 for 1 cocktails were fab too! Gifts in hand, I trooped with everyone who'd turned up for drinks down to Erskineville via a liquor store or two for dinner at Delhi o Delhi where our table was festooned with colourful red and orange balloons secretly arranged by my darling man. The restaurant serves sensationally good Indian food - although weirdly served us butter chicken even though my gorgeous guy had asked for a substitute - and the service is wonderful. That always makes a great night like a birthday dinner feel like a million dollar experience.

I ended up at a table with Tracy, Ellen, Ian, John P and Kerry and had a ball catching up with them, darting over to the other table with Justin and Cam, my gorgeous guy, Peter and Warren and Aidan from time to time. I had a ball and the birthday cake, a lavender cake, was YUMMO. It was served with kulfi and it looked sensational too with my guy dressing it up with red EVERYTHING. It looked awesome and I don't think I have loved a cake more (save for the fabulous cup cake tower of two years ago, which let's face it will take some beating!)

Dinner, and tweeting about it over, Aidan and I walked the balloons and gifts to the car which was parked over near MacDonaldtown station before walking back to meet Ian, Warren, Kerry and my guy at the Imperial Hotel where we talked (over the music), drank a whole lot more, and where a drunk African-American man came onto me. That was hi-larious! But we eventually got tired and it's not really Kerry's scene anyway so we ended home and I went to sleep in the arms of the man I love.

I doubt the day could have been anymore perfect.

... and the greetings kept on pouring in overnight from overseas where it was still most definitely my birthday.
