365 Pink Feather Boas All in a Row - Day 38 (Sunday 7 February 2010) : Mamma Mia! It's a Zoo Out There Fernando...
Not content with getting deluged last night, tonight I ventured out again to another outdoor event!
Then I figured, in this order, (a)what the heck, (b) how much wetter can I get than last night, and (c) I put my faith in the fact that it hasn't rained all day (ever the optimist, balancing my half-full glass in one hand and joie de vivre in the other!), and I sallied forth with my beautiful guy, my close friends, Warren, Peter (who's about to jet off for South America for 4 months) and Ian, and Ian's very good friend, and all around lovely guy, David, to Taronga Zoo for one of their Twlight concert series.
After enduring the excreable sounds of the musical highlights package last year, fronted by some musicals 'star' with so many tickets on herself it's a wonder she didn't tip over and crush passing small animals under the sheer weight of her own ego, we had an absolute hoot last night - yes you know you have had a lots of fun when the word 'hoot' is invoked! - watching Bjorn Again. I had heard they were fun to watch, and figured that I should see them since it's the closest I will ever get to seeing ABBA, and while they weren't exactly the Fab Four from Sweden, they were a lot of fun, and gave the capacity crowd (of mostly mumd, dads and kids, raisin the question of where were the gay boys?! Well beside myself and my five fellow queens) a rollicking good time.
One could argue that how could you fail to have a fun time with all those melodically bouyant ABBA tunes to carry you along, and the crowd certainly had a ball dancing and Ring Ring-ing, but a lot of the fun we had tonight was due to the sheer cheesiness and good humour of Bjorn Again, who managed to make a drizzly, humid night bright, effervescent and joyful (witness the shameless mugging to "Ring Ring" below!).
My only gripe, apart from the fact that the low slung picnic chair I was sitting in made it impossible stand up gracefully or reach any of the food easily, is that they didn't play any of the obscure B-sides like "Should I Laugh or Cry?" or "Elaine". I really didn't expect them to, and exposed myself as more of an ABBA tragic than I thought I was by regurgitating ABBA trivia all night long, but it would have been the icing on the cake of one of the best nights I have had in a long time, wet or dry!
