365 Pink Feather Boas All in a Row - Day 246 : When I Grow Up 2

Following on from part 1 of my career coaching preparartion (see yesterday's entry), here's the second part of my self-evaluation that looked at my favourite types of media and why I like them...

Books

Sci fi/space operas/fantasy – they are wild flights of imagination, coupled with events that are so out of the ordinary that you can get carried away by them without needing to reference reality. They are epic, expansive, and go for broke, and I can switch off and lose myself in them

Current affairs – booked that examine everything from how malls are designed to the mania for bottled water to the current political state of the USA. Anything that drenches me in information gets me thinking and explores why. I loving learning new stuff and thinking it through.

Pop culture/ TV/Movies – I love books that look at specific TV shows, or the industry in general – I am a media junkie and looking at the whys and hows of the media world is fascinating.

Literary novels – hate the term because it’s elitist but I mean novels that revolve around characters, who then drive the narrative. I always emotionally connect with these novels, and become very much a part of the characters’ lives. I wouldn’t say its an escape because many of the stories involve great emotional arcs, but it’s absorbing and substantial.

Magazines

TIME/Newsweek/The Economist – I am a political junkie from way back and immersing myself in lengthy articles is a joy. Feeds my love of information and desire to think the weighty issues of our day through.

Empire/ Film Ink/Entertainment Weekly – Media industry mags with lots of info on upcoming movies especially. Keeps me up to date and fees my insatiable desire to know things and do something with them.

DNA /Attitude/Advocate – Gay mag. Lots of guy candy but more importantly lots of information of the gay issues of the day. Came into their own when I came back and wanted to identify closely with my LGBT community.

Newspapers

Sydney Morning Herald

Local and World News – for the same reason I watch SBS news, I want to be well informed on local and world events by a reliable, well researched and written source. This is usually my first port of call during the week.

Metro is my thing on Fridays for all the entertainment news & music reviews.

But on Saturday, I head straight for Spectrum to soak up all the pop culture news I can get my hands on – music (I adore music), cinema, books.

TV Shows

So many but here are my top 5:

Glee – clever writing, great music, fun, silliness, serious issues, campness. It’s all fun!

Frasier – great characters, great comedy and an intelligence many sitcoms lack.

Stargate (any variant) – well written, escapist sci fi. Like a warm bath after a stressful day in reality.

Better Off Ted/Nurse Jackie/Modern Family – I love quirky offbeat well written comedies that shine a light on society. It’s great to laugh at the absurdities of life since while I think deeply, I take the serious stuff seriously and the rest is fair game!

Brothers and Sisters – great characters, total soap but I like the characters, and want to spend time with them. Again an escapist element of sorts.

Movies

Romantic Comedies – I am romantic at heart and there’s something about the best rom coms where the characters are sparring to being with and then fall in love…. Awwww…. Favourites are Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, While You Were Sleeping.

French movies (+ world cinema) – I hated these movies as a child learning French but now I am an adult, I love the French sense of the absurd, their quirky ability to take a totally unique take on life. They are fun to watch, the language is sublime, and the music jaunty and fun.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy – movies like Lord of the Rings and Inception let you slip into an alternate reality for two hours plus and escape reality. Big escapist fun!

>>>>>>>>>>>all of my choices in the above categories reflect the fact that while I am very good at dealing with the realities of life, and not shirking from what’s required of me, I love escaping into pretend worlds of any hue in any genre where the only demand is to accept the reality presented and let yourself be immersed into it for whatever time is given.
