365 Pink Feather Boas All in a Row - Day 164 (Sunday 13 June 2010) : Dr Whoooooooooooooooo!

I do love Dr Who.

It scared the bejesus out of me as a child, and I still can't brush up against a plant without remembering Seeds of Doom where alien spores turned people into giant violnet plants, and it was very cartoony, but the new series, primarily the ones with David Tennant in them, were thoughtful, emotionally intelligent, and clever, and dragged me right in.

David Tennant alas, has now departed - he was by far the hottest, sexiest doctor - and while I love Matt Smith and his new sidekick, I can't help but feel that the new Dr Who is being dumbed down and infantilised, as evidenced by the Confidential (a weekly behind-the-scenes look at the episode that's just aired) that was on last night which centred on a tour the actors and PR team undertook to.... schools.

Now there is nothing wrong with targeting kid as your demographic, but when the series has been so clever and heartfelt up till now, I lament the cartoonish nature of the new episodes, and hope this isn't some sort of calculated attempt to get younger viewers, which risks alienating older viewers. Certainly while I love my weekly Dr Who fix, it definitely isn't as satisfying as it once was, which is a pity.
